Ways to get involved.

The best way to meet new people is to involve yourself in your community. Here is a list of a ways you can involve yourself in your community.

  • Join civic and fraternity clubs
  • Volunteer with non-profit organizations
  • Attend church
  • Attend local sports events
  • Get involved with hobbies
  • Join lead clubs
  • Join your home owners association
  • Join a gym
  • Participate in family outings at school or church.
  • Get in volved with local or regional politics

The important thing to remember is that you should only get involved with something that your are genuinely interested in. Or, you may want to get involved with something that involves your children, like coaching a team or leading a Boy or Girl Scout Troop. That way your community involvement time is also family time.

As you involve yourself in community oriented groups keep in mind that just joining won't do you much good. You should go in with a strategy to create visibility and face time with as many members as possible. If you join a civic group volunteer to serve on and lead committees. It's not only who you know, it's also who knows you. If you belong to a club with a hundred or more members it is easier to get visibility if you are leading the meeting than if you are always seated at the back of the room with same group of friends each week.

Which brings up another important point. Don't fall into the trap of sitting with the same group of people each week. Move around and meet new people each week. Try to target one member a week that you try to have lunch with and if possible linger after the meeting and dig deep with them. Try to find out how you can help them.
